Christmas Decorating Tips From An Interior Designer

Homes turn into festive, joyous spaces filled with towering trees, glittering globes, and other delightful decorations every Christmas. Here are some Christmas Decorating Tips to help you decorate your home for the holidays, courtesy of Interior Designer Carol Peña-Santos.

1 CHOOSE A THEME

Having a theme can take your Christmas Decorating game to new heights. Whether it’s birds, flora and fauna, Santas, or even Hello Kitty, having a theme that suits your taste will make your search for the right decorations easier, exciting, and more interesting.

2 DECIDE ON A COLOR PALETTE

As a color theory professor, Carol normally decides on a color palette first. “Most of the time, I start with the family’s preferred colors. Look at your existing décor and figure out your base color. Keeping it neutral—white, gray, black, or even beige—will give your design flexibility,” Carol tips.

Christmas Decorating Tips

3 BE CONSISTENT

Your Christmas decorations should be present throughout your home. Your chosen theme and color scheme should be evident in your tree, in garlands and wreaths, centerpieces, and even your table settings when you entertain.

4 LIGHTING IS ESSENTIAL

First, check that Christmas lights you purchase are certified tested and safe. Better yet, test them yourself by inspecting each bulb for dullness or breakage. Many fires during the holidays are due to faulty Christmas lights.

5 THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX

You don’t always need to use the usual Christmas Decor ornaments such as balls, angels, ribbons, and poinsettias to adorn your trees and wreaths. You can opt to use whatever you want, or combine them with more traditional pieces. I have used twigs, flowers, stuffed animals, toy cars, masks, candelabras, lanterns, and even picture frames. Use whatever catches your eye and appeals to you.

Christmas Decorating can get expensive if you decide to change your holiday décor every year. Make sure you keep the original packaging of your purchases so you can pack them put them away and pack them properly. If stored well, your decorations can last longer.

7 ENJOY!

Always decorate with joy in your heart. Get into your best mood before you even start touching those Christmas ornaments—your happiness will be evident in the art you create.
