Mary Ann “Maan” Espina designs gardens that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but reflective of their users. “I like designs that are expressive of my clients’ needs and relevant to their context”, she says. Graduated from the University of San Carlos with a degree in Architecture, she later on took Landscape Architecture at the University of the Philippines Diliman and then a masteral degree at the University of Massachusetts. Her personal style leans towards modern Filipino and tropical designs.
Inspired by the principles of Zen gardens, Maan always fuses form with function. “Every little detail in a Zen garden has meaning”, she shares. For those who are building a new home or renovating, she stresses the importance of keeping the designs sustainable. “Take care of the environment while building. We should all learn to earn carbon credits!” she says.
